Amazon officially announced on 4 August 2020 that they have begun work on launching Amazon.se.
“Amazon has been supporting Swedish customers and selling partners across our different European stores for many years, but the next step is to bring a full retail offering to Sweden and we are making those plans now,”
– Alex Ootes, Vice President EU Expansion at Amazon
What does this mean for Danes?
We know that over the past few years, Amazon has been working towards opening a Danish version of Amazon.
Their launch with our neighbours in Sweden means they are one step closer to realising this plan.
Amazon’s nearest fulfilment centre is currently located in Hamburg, and they are planning to open a new one just 50 km from the Danish-German border.
With the launch in Sweden, we may see a fulfilment centre closer to eastern Denmark.
This could result in faster and potentially cheaper delivery for Danish consumers.
It is important to note that Danes have long been able to shop on Amazon via their British and German websites.
In fact, they are already one of the largest online retailers in Denmark.
Amazon in Swedish
Back in December 2019, Amazon was looking for Swedish translators, and now, in August 2020 (about 8 months later), they have officially announced that they are launching in Sweden.
Amazon has not yet actively recruited Danish translators, so an official entry into Denmark is still some way off.
When Amazon arrives in Denmark, it will mean increased competition, especially in B2C, and will undoubtedly provide strong competition for many webshops.
However, if you are a manufacturer or wholesaler, Amazon represents a significant opportunity for you.
The marketplace enables you to use Amazon as a direct sales channel to consumers.
If you do not want the hassle of picking and packing, customer service, and returns, you can handle everything through Amazon’s Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA).
Find out what it costs to sell through Amazon right here
If you are a wholesaler already selling in European countries, you can already benefit from selling through Amazon now.
This will also put you ahead of the curve when Amazon fully enters Denmark.
We have written an article where you can find out if Amazon is right for your business right here.
In any case, it will be exciting to follow developments in Sweden.
It could provide a good indication of how the market will develop when Amazon eventually launches in Denmark.
